Programs for 1-5 yrs.

Bakers Dozen- Ages 1-5 yrs. Join us as we measure and mix our way through simple cookie recipes perfect for the season. After our work in the kitchen is done, and while the cookies cool, Holly will read a story to enhance the theme of the month. At the end of each session, families will each be given a dozen of their homemade delights to share with those they love. This is a parent/child program. Parents must be present. Instructor: Holly Baker, Rec. Supervisor


Program for 3-5 yrs.

Going on a Bear Hunt w/Parker T. Bear- Ages 3-5 years. Join Parker T. Bear, our department mascot, and the Rec. Staff for these great Parent/Child walks in our city’s parks and natural areas.  Each Friday we discover another new park and trail.  The hour and a half will consist of a walk, snack and special outdoor activity.  Offered in the Fall.  Instructors:  Rec. Staff


Lil’Picassos- Ages 3-5 yrs. What child doesn’t love to get their hands dirty? Come make a mess, as we introduce 3 different art mediums for your child to explore. Children will be introduced to some of history’s most treasured works of art and will have a chance to create their own masterpiece sure to enhance even the most prestigious refrigerator. Pre-School Swim- Ages 3-5 yrs. Recreation & Parks and The Edge are teaming up to offer the Learn to Swim Program.  The goal of the program is to introduce new swimming techniques and increase safety skills around the water.  The lessons follow the Red Cross guidelines and each level provides a building block for the next.  Offered 6 times throughout the Fall, Winter and Spring.  Instructors: The Edge Swim Instructors


Lil'Tykes- Baseball/Softball, Ages 3-5 yrs. This program is designed to introduc e the game of baseball and softball through fun games and baseball/softball activities. It will provide participants with the opportunity to interact and play with children within their own age group.  Each week consists of different skills and games.  Offered in the Spring.  Instructors:  Rec. Staff.  This is a parent/child program.


Squirts Sports Camp- Ages 3-5 yrs. The Sport Squirts program introduces children to a variety of sports such as Soccer, T-ball, Basketball, Lacrosse and Hockey, all taking place in a safe structured environment ensuring learning is taking place.  Offered in the Summer.  Instructors: US Sports Institute Coaches.


Lil'Tykes Sports Programs- 3-4 yrs.


Lil’Tykes Soccer- Ages 3-4 years. Our soccer program is designed to introduce the game of soccer through fun games and soccer activities. It will provide participants with the opportunity to interact and play with children within their own age group.  Each week a new skill is introduced and fun games.  Offered in the Fall.  Instructors:  Rec. Staff.  This is a parent/child program.


Lil’Tykes Gymnastics- Ages 3-4 yrs. This program is designed to introduce children to moving and tumbling.  Floor exercises and basic movement will be explored.  We will have fun using basic gymnastics equipment and mats.  Offered in the Spring.  Instructors: Rec. Staff.  This is a parent/child program.


KinderPros Sports Programs- 5-6 yrs. (PreK & K)

KinderPros- Soccer, Ages 5-6 yrs. Children will have the opportunity to learn, practice, and develop their individual skills. The program begins with a one day clinic, remaining sessions are 20 minute practices and 30 minute scrimmages. Parent volunteers are needed to help coach. Instructors: Rec. Staff


KinderPros- Basketball, Ages 5-6 yrs. This program is designed to introduce the game of basketball through fun games and basketball activities.  It will provide participants with the opportunity to interact and play with children within their age group.  Each week consists of a different skill and games.  Offered in the Winter.  Instructors: Rec. Staff.  This is a parent/child program.


KinderPros- Taekwondo, Ages 5-6 yrs. Your little ones will enjoy kicking and jumping around, while learning focus, respect and self control in this introductory Taekwondo program.  Offered in the Fall and Spring.  Instructor: Sue Myers, 3rd Degree Black Belt Instructor


KinderPros- Gymnastics- Ages 5-6 yrs. Does your child love to jump, tumble and roll? If so, they will want to join us and explore climbing, tumbling, balancing and body movement in this basic gymnastics program. Instructor: Rec. Staff


Indoor Soccer Program- Grade K-2nd. This program is designed for all youngsters who enjoy the game of soccer, with the major emphasis on exercise and fun. The program begins with a clinic on the first day; covering rules, team assignments, and schedules. Remaining sessions will consist of one hour games, twice a week.  Instructors: Rec. Staff


KinderPros Lacrosse- Ages 5-6 yrs. Does your child enjoy throwing a Lacrosse ball around? This clinic is designed to teach and develop basic lacrosse skills. The major emphasis is on having fun while learning the game of lacrosse. Equipment is provided. Instructors: Rec. Staff


KinderPros Golf- Ages 5-7 yrs. At Catamount Golf we have a great training facility that includes a two-tiered driving range, and multiple greens for practicing. Our goal is to introduce the game of golf to beginners in a fun, active setting. Children will learn the fundamentals of golf. Instructor: Bill Boldwin, Director of Golf



Youth Programs

Young Rembrandts Drawing Programs- 1st-5th grades. This award-winning art enrichment program has given the power of drawing to thousands of young artists across the United States. As students learn and implement technical drawing skills, they use problem-solving skills, innovation and imagination to put them all together into eye-popping masterpieces! Offered in the Fall and Spring.  Instructors: Young Rembrandt Instructors.


REC Vacation Programs- Ages 5-12 yrs. Our Vacation Programs are a fun, safe place for children to spend their school break.  Activities include indoor and outdoor games, arts & crafts, and special themed activities. Programs are 7:30am-5:30pm daily, or you can sign your child up for half day options- Mornings- 7:30am-12:30pm or Afternoons- 12:30-5:30pm. You also have the option of picking the number of days to attend. Vacation Programs are offered 5 times a year during the school breaks- October, November, December, February and April.  Instructors:  Rec. Staff


Baby-sitters Courses- Ages 11 & up. Join this interactive class on the basics of baby-sitting. The course includes safety and safe play, basic care, first aid, leadership, and professionalism. Each participant will receive a workbook, emergency guide and a CD of useful tools.  Offered in the Fall, Winter and Spring.  Instructor: Certified ARC instructor.


Soccer Programs- 1st-6th

Jr. Soccer Leagues- 1st & 2nd Grades. Separate girls and boys leagues are offered.  The league provides participants with an opportunity to continue to learn the game of soccer, improve on their individual skills, and enjoy playing the game while making new friends. The league meets twice a week for 1 hour each time.  Offered in the Fall.  Parent volunteers are recruited to coach teams.

Separate Girls and Boys leagues are offered.  This league is our next progression of Rec. Soccer. Participants in this league will have the opportunity to learn and improve their individual soccer skills, as well as begin working on teamwork and cooperative play.  This league meets twice a week for an hour each time.  Offered in the Fall.  Parent volunteers are recruited to coach teams.

Separate girls and boys leagues are offered.  This league is a travel league, as we play other recreation departments in the area.  This league is great for all abilities.  If your child loves to play soccer and cannot get enough, this league will provide them the opportunity to play with other South Burlington children in a fun, relaxing atmosphere where they can improve their skills and make new friends.  Offered in the Fall.  Parent volunteers are recruited to coach teams.


Basketball Programs- 1st-6th

Youth Tennis Programs- 1st-8th

Quick Start Lessons- Completing grades 1st-2nd.  Smaller and lighter equipment, courts and balls make this level easier for the younger player.  Basic tennis skills will be taught and developed.   All equipment is supplied.  Offered in the Summer and Fall.  Instructors: Rec. Staff

Youth Tennis Clinics- Completing grades 3rd-6th.  Beginner & Advanced Beginner lessons will include skill development and fun games to develop the backhand, forehand, and volleying skills.  Short sided games are played.  Offered in the Summer and Spring.  Instructors: Rec. Staff.

Tween Play Tennis- Completing grades 5th-8th.  This program is for the Advanced Beginner or Intermediate who wants to improve their skills and game play.  You will work on performance and game strategy while playing more tennis.  Offered in Summer and Spring.  Instructors: Rec. Staff


Youth Sports Programs- 1st-6th

Indoor Soccer Programs- Grades K-5th . These programs are designed for all youngsters who enjoy the game of soccer, with the major emphasis on exercise and fun. Cheerleading Clinic- K-6th. Does your child love to Jump and Cheer?  If so, then they will love this cheerleading clinic.  Creative dance moves and low level stunts will be taught.  Participants will be grouped by grade and experience. No uniform or special equipment is needed.  Offered in the Spring.  Instructor: Lynn Kynoch, High School Varsity Coach.  This program is Coed.


Floor Hockey- Grades 1st-2nd & 3rd-6th. Floor Hockey is a fun indoor sport, come try it out with us! Each week we will split into teams and play for the hour. No equipment needed. Instructors: Rec Staff


Field Hockey Clinic- Grades 1st/2nd & 3rd-6th. This program is for any youngster looking to get outside, be active and learn a new sport- Field Hockey. Each week will consist of learning the skills and playing the game. Instructors; Rec. Staff


Lacrosse Clinic- 1st-2nd Grades- This coed program will give your child the skills to be a better player.  This clinic is designed to teach and develop basic lacrosse skills.  The major emphasis is on having fun while learning the game of lacrosse.   Equipment provided, but you may bring your own stick.  Offered in the Spring. Instructors: Rec. Staff


Youth Track & Field- Ages 7-15 yrs. Youngsters will receive training in both track and field events.  Fee includes a team shirt and all entry fees for the track meets. Dual meets will also be scheduled throughout the summer with other area Recreation Departments.  Age- based on age as of December 31, of the current year.  The program is held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and is offered in mid June thru July.


Intro to Taekwondo-Ages 7-12 yrs. A mixture of taekwondo training, self-defense and leadership skills taught in a fun, high energy environment. The kids will participate in a combination of traditional martial arts training, fun group games and team-based physical challenges.  Offered in the Fall and Spring.  Instructor: Sue Myers, 3rd Degree Black Belt Instructor


Gymnastics- Ages 7-12 yrs.
The Recreation Department is teaming up with Green Mountain Gymnastics to offer an introductory gymnastic program at their facility in Williston. The program is for the beginners level, with instruction on gymnastic apparatus and floor. Instructors: Green Mountain Gymnastics Staff.


Youth Golf Lessons- Ages 5-11 yrs
. The golf lessons offered at Catamount Golf Center focus on the set-up, grip and making a full swing hitting the golf ball. Clubs can be provided if needed.  Offered in the Spring and Summer.  Instructor:


Learn to Swim Program- Ages 5-12 years
. The Learn to Swim Program introduces swimming techniques and increases safety skills around the water.  The lessons follow the Red Cross guidelines and each level provides a building block for the next.  Levels 1-4 will be offered at The Edge of South Burlington.  Lessons are 1/2 hour for 6 weeks and are offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Saturdays.  6 Sessions are offered September thru June.  Instructors: Certified Swimming instructors of The Edge.



Teen Programs

Baby-sitters Courses- Ages 11 & up. Join this interactive class on the basics of baby-sitting. The course includes safety and safe play, basic care, first aid, leadership, and professionalism. Each participant will receive a workbook, emergency guide and a CD of useful tools.  Offered in the Fall, Winter and Spring.  Instructor: Certified ARC instructor.


Boater Safety Course- Ages 12 & Older
. Recreation & Parks in conjunction with the VT State Police, offers a Boater Safety Course. The course is open to all youth, teens & adults (12 years of age and older). The course is 8 hours and is offered in 4 days. Participants must be present at all sessions to be eligible for certification. The course is mandatory for any person, born after January 1, 1974, who will be operating a motorboat on VT waters.  Offered in the Spring.  Instructor: John Fick


Snowmobile Safety Course- Ages 12 & up. Recreation & Parks in conjunction with the VT State Police, offers a Snowmobile Safety Course.  The 6-hour course is offered in three evening sessions. Participants must be present for all classes in order to be eligible for certification. The VT State law requires all snowmobile operators born after July 1, 1983 to take and pass a snowmobile safety course. Offered in the Winter.  Instructor:  VT State Police


SAT Bootcamp- 9th-12th Grades. This interactive workshop is designed to maximize SAT performance by understanding the test, learning proven test strategies, and creating a personal study plan.  Critical Reading, Writing, and Math sections are covered.  Offered in the Fall.  Instructors: Lauren Starkey & Karen Needler.


Drivers Education Class- Grades 9th-12th  . South Burlington Recreation offers 2 sessions of Driver’s Education with Cindi Hartman of LTD Driving School starting in early November and early February. Each course is 6 weeks. Classroom portion is Monday-Friday, 4:00-5:00pm and driving is 5:00-7:00pm Monday-Friday, and 9:00-11:00am, 11:00am-1:00pm or 1:00-3:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Instructor: Cindi Hartman, LTD Driving


Teen Sports

Teen Basketball League- Boys 7th & 8th Grade. Each year we offer a 7th & 8th grade league for Boys who are looking for a recreational league or those that might not otherwise make the school team. This league, like the 5th & 6th grade league, travels to local Recreation Departments for games. There is also a tournament at the end of the season. This is a great opportunity to play basketball and receive equal playing time while doing it. Offered in the Winter. Parent volunteers are recruited to coach teams.

 


Adult Fitness Programs

Hatha Yoga- Ages 18 & up. Experience a yoga class integrating movement (asana) and mindfulness, energy and breathe (pranayama), deep rest and relaxation (yoga nidra). Appropriate for beginners, all bodies and all ages. This class is an eclectic mix of yoga styles, providing for unique and creative sessions.  Offered Year Round- Tuesday Evenings from 6:30-8:00pm. Instructor: Maeve McBride.


BNB- Brand New Beginner Course- Ages 18 & up. The Honest Yoga Center is also offering yoga for beginners. Vow to heal yourself and witness the changes. You will build a series of postures and learn correct alignment. Our Brand New Beginner Course teaches the fundamental principles that work quickly to improve your posture, alleviate pain, and focus your mind. After your very first class, you will feel relaxed and energized. After eight classes, you will understand why yoga is the oldest, most effective system of wellness in existence. Instructor: Danielle Vardakas-Duszko


Zumba Fitness- Ages 18 & up. Ditch the Workout, Join the Party!  These Zumba Classes are Latin-inspired, dance-fitness classes that incorporate Latin and international music and dance movements- creating a dynamic, exciting, exhilarating and effective fitness system.  Join one or more of these classes with our instructors.  Offered Year Round- Mondays, Wednesdays- 6:30-7:30pm & Saturdays- 9:00-10:00am.  Instructors: Lisa Guerrero and Donna & Brooke Sharpe.


Jazzercise- Ages 16 & up. Each 60 minute workout is a fusion of dance & muscle toning movement choreographed to today’s hottest music, including Top 40, Jazz, Country, Funk & Classics. Every class includes a warm up, 30 minute aerobic workout, muscle toning & strengthening segment with weights, & a stretch finale. Instructor: Tamie Dickinson, Certified Jazzercise Instructor.


Jazzercise Lite- Ages 16 and up. Jazzercise Lite is a 60 minute Dance Aerobic Class with strength training, and all the moves & choreography you enjoy in a Jazzercise Class with the hop taken out- easy on the hips, knees & back. You decide whether to take it up a notch. The Instructor will guide you, either way it’s energizing. Instructor: Kit Sayers, Certified Jazzercise Instructor.


Jazzercise Lite- Personal Training- Ages 16 & up. Take your Fitness to the next level with Jazzercise Personal Training. This Jazzercise program will work your muscles using your own body weight, hand held weights, & resistant tubes in a small group class. You’ll work on functional exercise to gain flexibility & balance and you’ll receive the personal attention of your Jazzercise instructor making sure you are using correct technique to receive the most from your workout. Art Programs

Watercolor Basics- Ages 18 & up. From beginning watercolor painters to those with some experience, all  participants will enjoy exploring fun and interesting ways of painting colorful spring subjects in this supportive class environment.   You will be encouraged to loosen up and use this wonderful, sometimes unpredictable medium to its advantage!  Offered in the Spring and Fall.  Instructor: Lynn Cummings



Hobby & Education Programs

Get Paid to Talk- Making Money with your Voice- Ages 18 & up. “Get Paid to Talk, Making Money with Your Voice” is an introduction to professional voice-over.   This exciting class will cover the basics and explore numerous aspects of voice-over work for television, film, radio, audio books, documentaries and the internet in your area. Offered in the Spring and Fall.  Instructor: Voice-Over Coaches Instructors


Fly-Tying Course- Ages 16 & up. Join Central Vermont Trout Unlimited for this beginner’s class.  You will learn a variety of fly-tying techniques and trout fly patterns.  No experience required.  Participants are responsible for their own Tying Tools.  Offered in the Winter.  Instructor: Paul Zuchowski.


Fly Fishing Workshop- Ages 18 & up. This is an introduction to the basics of fly fishing for the novice who is looking to learn the sport.  Classes include; introduction to fly fishing and equipment, stream biology, fly-casting instruction and practice, fly selection and knot tying. This is being offered by the Central Vermont Trout Unlimited Chapter.  The fee includes a one-year membership to Trout Unlimited.   All equipment will be provided.  Offered in the Spring.  Instructor: Mark Wilde, FFF Certified Casting Instructor and owner of Uncle Jammers Guide Service.


Boater Safety Course- Ages 12 & Older. Recreation & Parks in conjunction with the VT State Police, offers a Boater Safety Course. The course is open to all youth, teens & adults (12 years of age and older). The course is 8 hours and is offered in 4 days. Participants must be present at all sessions to be eligible for certification. The course is mandatory for any person, born after January 1, 1974, who will be operating a motorboat on VT waters.  Offered in the Spring.  Instructor: John Fick


Snowmobile Safety Course- Ages 12 & up. Recreation & Parks in conjunction with the VT State Police, offers a Snowmobile Safety Course.  The 6-hour course is offered in three evening sessions. Basic Training & Social Skills- Dog/Puppy- Ages 18+, Dogs- 8 weeks & up. This 6-week class will focus on building a foundation of manners; not jumping or nipping, basic training, and social skills. It is tailored to puppies, but older dogs, newly adopted dogs, or owners wanting a foundation in basic dog training will also benefit. Instructor: Deb Helfrich, Gold Star Owner


Beyond Basics- Dog Training- Ages 18+, Dogs- 6 months & up. This class is the next step after the “Basic Training”. It takes your training to the next level where YOU decide! This permits “perfect fit” training for you and your dog! The atmosphere is supportive, yet challenging. The emphasis is on what you want to achieve. Instructor: Deb Helfrich, Gold Star Owner


Dog Park Safety- Ages 18 & up. Is there a dog that makes you uncomfortable? Do you know the warning signs to a fight? These and many more questions will be addressed. See fascinating photos and video clips that will help you to read dogs. Instructors: Maryellen Sullivan/Deb Helfrich: Gold Star Dog Training


Adult Sports Programs

Men’s Open Gym Basketball- 35 & up. Informal pickup games are played weekly for the person who enjoys low-key play and looking to get a little exercise.  Offered September- June, Friday Evenings form 6:30-8:30pm.  An updated schedule of dates and locations can be found on our website.  $2 per person, per visit fee.


Adult Open Gym Volleyball- 18 & up. Informal pickup games are played weekly for those who love to play volleyball and get a little exercise. This program is for the recreational player.  Offered September- June from 6:30-8:30pm.  An updated schedule of dates and location can be found on our website. $2 per person, per visit fee.


Pickleball- Ages 18 & up. Join local pickleball players and enjoy a morning of playing this popular sport. Coordinators; Ted and Judy Selfridge


Tennis Clinic- Ages 18 & up. The clinic consists of group lessons for beginners and advanced beginners.  Classes are structured to provide plenty of time for instruction, practice and skill development.  Offered in the Summer and Fall.  Instructor: Sue Vaughn


Play Tennis Program- Ages 18 & up. Have you done the lesson thing?  Are you looking to play and perfect your game strategy?  If so, join this tennis program for adults that allow you to play under the instruction of our tennis staff and learn how to perfect your game play, while playing.  Offered in the Summer and Fall.  Instructor: Sue Vaughn


Golf Clinics- Catamount- Ages 18 & up. The goal is to introduce the game of golf to beginners in a fun, active setting. Adv. beginners and intermediate golfers work in groups to attain their goals of bringing their game to the next level, tee to green. Instructor: Bill Boldwin, Golf Director


Get Ready Golf Clinics- Ages 18 & up. Are you looking for an intro to golf or would like to improve your skills?  Then this group clinic is perfect for you. The important shots required to play a round of golf will be taught; Putting, Chipping, Pitching, and Full Swing are stressed. Introductory rules and etiquette are also discussed.  Offered in the Spring.  Instructor: Barry Churchill, PGA Golf Instructor.

 

 

Tai Chi- Ages 50+. This 8 week class, sponsored by CVAA, had shown to improve flexibility, reduce stiffness and keep joints mobile. Sign up today for a new you! Instructor is certified through the Arthritis Foundation. Instructor: Adina Panitch


Matter of Balance- Ages 50+. Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury for older Americans? The good news is falls are preventable! Join this 8 week class, sponsored by FAHC, to find out how. Instructor: Dawn Weening


Healthier Living w/Chronic Conditions Ages 50+. Do you have one or more chronic conditions? Learn to manage your symptoms and improve the quality of life through this 8 week course, sponsored by FAHC. People who have taken the course report an improved quality-of-life. Instructor: Dawn Weening


Jazzercise Lite- Gold, Ages 50+. Jazzercise Lite is a low to no-impact aerobic circuit class with lots of energy.  Perfect for seniors, beginners, or anyone looking for a full workout with easy to follow dance aerobics, strength training, balance and flexibility.  Use of a chair is optional.  Offered Year Round- Monday/Wednesday/Fridays from 10:30-11:30am.  10 visit Punch Pass can be purchased at the recreation office.  Instructor: Kit Sayers, Jazzercise Certified Instructor
