| The South Burlington Recreation
Path began as an idea that developed into a large grass roots citizen`s
organization. A few friends gathered in the winter of 1989 to discuss
how there could be a safe off-road community path that might connect
South Burlington`s parks, schools, and neighborhoods. Burlington`s
bike path and Stowe`s Recreation Path were used as models. A survey
indicated strong support and a volunteer committee was formed. This
committee first convinced the City Council and Planning Commission
that a path was possible and then proceeded to coordinate all aspects
of the development. Landowner negotiations, fundraising, and public
education were ongoing for three years. Voters approved a bond in
May 1990 for $400,000 to construct Phase I (4.3 miles). A Land and
Water Conservation Fund Grant of $69,000 was awarded in November 1990
to build Phase II (1.5 miles), and an Agency of Transportation Grant
of $613,000 was awarded in March 1992 to build Phase III (2.2 miles).
More than 500 other individuals, groups, and businesses donated additional
funds to help build this path. Over 100 volunteers have served on
the committee since its beginning. Landowners generously donated rights-of-way
so the path could cross their property.
The South Burlington Recreation Path
has truly been a community team effort and everyone should be proud
of the results. There is still more that can be built within South
Burlington and many connections to be made to neighboring communities.
The path currently connects to the Burlington Bike Path system.
